Indore’s homes have always had a character of their own. Traditional houses often revolved around aangan, verandahs, courtyards, natural ventilation, shaded spaces and close family living. Modern homes, meanwhile, are increasingly defined by apartments, contemporary façades, smart technology, premium interiors and compact layouts.
But does choosing a modern home mean leaving traditional architecture behind?
Perhaps not.
The future of Indore’s residential design could lie in bringing traditional wisdom into modern homes.
What Made Traditional Homes Work?
Traditional Indian architecture wasn’t only about aesthetics. Many of its features responded naturally to the local climate and lifestyle.
Courtyards brought daylight and ventilation into the home. Verandahs created shaded transition spaces. Jaalis filtered sunlight while allowing air to move. High ceilings and carefully positioned openings helped homes remain comfortable. These features also created something modern homes sometimes struggle to replicate a stronger connection between people, nature and open space.
The challenge today is that urban land is more expensive, plots are smaller, and lifestyles have changed. Simply recreating an old-style house isn’t always practical.
So the answer may be adaptation rather than imitation.
Traditional Ideas, Modern Homes
Imagine a contemporary apartment with a shaded balcony inspired by a traditional verandah. A villa with a compact courtyard bringing light and ventilation into the centre of the home. A modern façade using contemporary materials alongside jaali-inspired screens for shade and privacy or an open living space connected to a landscaped courtyard instead of a completely enclosed interior.
These ideas show how traditional architectural principles can be reinterpreted without making a home feel old-fashioned. Technology can become part of the equation too smart lighting, energy-efficient glazing, solar systems and modern insulation can work alongside passive design principles.
The goal isn’t to recreate the past. It’s to carry its intelligence forward.
Can Indore Create Its Own Modern Architectural Identity?
As Indore grows vertically and new residential developments reshape the city, there is an opportunity to create homes that feel distinctly Indian and distinctly Indore. Modern architecture doesn’t have to mean glass, concrete and minimalism alone. It can incorporate courtyards, shaded spaces, greenery, natural materials and climate-responsive planning while still delivering contemporary comfort.
For architects, developers and homeowners, the opportunity is exciting: build homes that look towards the future without forgetting what made homes comfortable in the past.
Because perhaps the most sustainable design trend isn’t something newly invented.
It may be an old idea, redesigned for a new Indore.
