Glass Facades

⏱️ 2 Minutes Read

Glass façades have become a familiar symbol of modern architecture. Sleek, reflective, minimal and visually striking, they can give a building an unmistakably contemporary identity. But in a city like Indore, where intense summer heat and strong sunlight are increasingly important design considerations, an interesting question emerges:

Is an all-glass façade simply a design statement or can it become an energy challenge?

When Style Meets the Sun

Glass allows abundant daylight into a building and can create a strong visual connection with the outside. It can make interiors feel open and modern while giving commercial and residential buildings a premium appearance. But more glass also means more potential solar heat gain, depending on the glass specification, orientation, shading and overall building design.

An improperly designed glass façade can allow significant heat into interior spaces, increasing the demand for air conditioning. What looks impressive from the outside could therefore have a very different impact on the building’s energy consumption.

This doesn’t mean glass is the problem. The real question is how intelligently it is used.

Can Glass Work in Indore’s Climate?

Absolutely but design matters.

High-performance glazing, low-emissivity coatings, appropriate window-to-wall ratios, external shading devices, recessed windows, fins, overhangs and thoughtfully designed façades can help manage solar heat gain. Orientation is equally important. A large glass surface facing intense afternoon sun presents a different challenge from one that is properly shaded and designed according to its orientation.

Combining glass with solid walls, balconies, jaalis, landscaping and shaded transition spaces can create a more balanced façade.

The objective should be to capture daylight without inviting excessive heat indoors.

The Future of Glass Architecture in Indore

As Indore’s skyline becomes more contemporary, glass façades will likely continue to be part of its architectural language. But the future may belong to buildings that balance visual appeal with climate intelligence. A premium building shouldn’t only look good in a photograph. It should perform well throughout the year.

For architects, developers and homeowners, the conversation therefore needs to move beyond “How much glass can we use?” to “How can we use glass intelligently?”

Because in a hotter Indore, true modern architecture may not be the building with the most glass.

It may be the building that uses glass, shade, ventilation, materials and technology together to create a better-performing space.
